How to Master Communication

To get people to want to follow you and join you on your journey, you must be able to speak to your audience. James Humes said it best, ” the art of communication is the language of leadership.” It’s impossible to be a highly effective leader without being a great communicator.

A significant communication skills gap was identified in a recent study by LinkedIn of human resources recruiters and hiring managers. Of the respondents, 94 percent said a person with good experience and exceptional communication skills is more likely to be elevated to a position of leadership than someone with more experience but weaker communication skills.

In Building the Best, I highlighted the 3 C’s of Successful Communication. Your words have to be:

  • Clear
  • Concise
  • Conclusive

Regardless of whether you are using spoken or written words, every message should pass through the 3C’s test.

A Proven Alternative Approach

In Steve Herz’s new book, Don’t Take Yes for An Answer, he described an alternative communication strategy called AWE. It stands for:

  • Authority – Earns other people’s respect
  • Warmth – Earns other peoples affection and trust
  • Energy – Compels other people to follow

“Developing AWE is the single greatest factor in determining whether you plateau or continue on to reach high levels of success”

Steve Herz

Closing

Regardless of what method of communication you buy into, the major lesson is being an effective communicator is a key to your success. It will help you in your career, in your marriage, and with personal relationships.

Prepare and practice to master your communication by asking yourself: How can I be clear, concise, conclusive and do it with authority, warmth, and energy!
